American advices to hand notify the sailing for this port of the clipper barque William Phillips, Captain J. H. Potter, on April 2nd. She comes here via Dunedin, and lias a cargo of 6000 cases kerosene and sundries divided between the two ports. The mail steamer Mariposa having discharged her 70 tons of cargo for Auckland, and replenished her bunkers with coal during the early morning, got away for Sydney about half-past 8 o'clock on Saturday. Early yesterday morning the barque lone, lately inwards from London, sailed ror Oamaru to load there for England. The barque Clan Macleod has been chartered in New York to bring a cargo of American merchandise to Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Auckland, and was expected to clear about May 24. After being delayed by adverse winds in Rangitoto Channel for several days, the barque Thomas A. Goddard sailed for New York early on Saturday morning. The barque Willowbank, with a valuable cargo of gum, flax, and sundries, has sailed for London. In their circular of April 25th, Messrs. R. W. Forbes and Son, of New York, state : — "Thedulness of the export business in oil has reacted upon the freight market, the result being a material reduction from the exorbitant ideas which owners have, until recently, held. Australia and New Zealand have profited by arrival of several vessels with flax and gum, most of which desired charters for the colonies/'

About midday on Saturday the. s.s. lona arrived from Mercury Bay and Kuaotunu, with passengers and cargo. The brigantine Ryno, after lying in the stream for some weeks, has been chartered by Messrs. J. T. Arundel for a round trip to their guano depots in the South Seas. She will shortly be despatched to Howland Island. The barque Devonport has been fixed to load timber for Sydney, and will proceed shortly to Whangaroa for her cargo. Early yesterday morning the s.s. Southern Cross arrived from East Coast ports and Wellington with several passengers and a cargo of 115 tons potatoes. Mr. Barnes, purser, informs us that she left Wellington at noon on the 21st, called at Napier on the 22nd, and at Gisborne at 3 p.m. on the 23rd, arriving here as above, having had light variable winds and fine weather throughout. Some little consternation was caused on Saturday by the awning of one of the ferry steamers accidentally catching fire from a spark from the funnel. The canvas was badly damaged, but the tire was extinguished promptly. At Badgwith, near the Lizard, a bottle has been washed ashore containing a card with the message, " Steamer Erin, Captain McGinty, at the bottom of the sea.' On the other side of the card is the printed address, "D. J. Woelke, banker and broker, New York." There is every reason to believe the card is a message from the missing National liner Erin, some weeks overdue from New York, and given up as lost. The gratifying announcement is made that the Pacific Steam Navigation Company's ships Iberia and Liguria, which for several years past have been running on the Orient route between London and Australia, will shortly be withdrawn, anrl their places taken by the magnificent new steamers Oruba and Orotava, recently built by the Naval Construction and Armament Company of Barrow-in-Furness. The Orotava will be commanded by Captain George Nugent Coulan, the commodore of the Pacific Company's fleet, who is so well and favourably known to the Australian travelling public. PORT OF ONEHUNGA. ARRIVALS. Parnell, brigantine, Norris, from Newcastle. »-Stone Brothers, agents. Takapuna, s.s., Grant, from the South. Passengers: Misses Sankey, Blackley, Brett, Cameron, Mesdames Conclell, Lee, and family (5), Captains Cameron, Fernandez, Messrs. Lee, Christie, Marriner, Willison, Duncan, Glover G. Burton, K. Stewart, Tracy, Laing.—Union S.S. Co., agents.
