THE TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS. Press Association.— Telegraph.-Copyright. London, April 30. The Newmarket Spring Meeting was continned to-day. The following was the result of Thk Two Thousand Guineas stakes, a subscription of lOOaovs each, h. ft. For three-year-olds : Colts, 9st; fillies, Sat 91b. The owner of the second horse to receive 200 sovs from the stakes, and the owner of the third to save his stake. Rowley mile. (81 subs.) Mr. A. W. Merry's b c Surefoot. by Wisdom, dam by Galopin—Miss Foote ... 1 Baron de Rothschild's ch c Le Nord, by Tristan— Noce 2 Duke of Westminster's b c Blue Green, by Ccertitflus—Angelica 3 The Hon. J. White's Narellan and Kirkham were scratched.

With the names of the Hon. James White's colts, Kirkham and Narellan, engaged in the Two Thousand Guineas this year much more interest was taken in that contest by colonial turfites than on any previous occasion; but their form on the training ground has been so disappointing that their playing a prominent part in the race was considered most unlikely, and their withdrawal is only what might have been anticipated. Surefoot, the hero of this year's battle over the Rowley Mile, showed h.mself last season to be a colt of great merit, oh he won three out of the four engagements he was called upon to fulfil. He made his debut in the Woodcote States of 950sovs, run at Kpsoin, in which contest he silenced a red-hot favourite in Lord Calthorpe's Heresy, six others being behind them. .Surefoot's next essay was in the Ascot Biennial Stakes, in which event he suffered defeat at the hands of the Duke of Portland's filly Semolina, who beat him a head after an exciting finish. At the same meeting he was sent out to contest the New Stakes of 1241sovs, which he won in a canter, heating Baron de Rothschild's lleaume and seven others. His lust engagement as a two-year-old was in the Findon Stakes of 220sovs, run at Croydon, which he also placed to his owner's credit. In the last quotations that, c une through by cable Surefoot was stated to be a staunch favourite for the Two Thousand Guineas at 2 to l, so that there is plenty of evidence of his party having backed him heavily. I* Nord, who acted as runner up to Surefoot, had previously proved himself a capital performer, as out of six occasions on which he sported silk as a year-old he won four times, while on the two other occasions ho finished in second place. Both Surefoot and Le Xord are engaged in the Derby, to he run next month. LIST OK WINNERS. c I * 2 Owner. Winner. Rider. H > H II m s 180.°, Mr. Naylor .. ...Macaroni ..
