PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL
[FROM OUR OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] . Cambridge, Monday. '1 he ordinary monthly meeting of the Piako County Council was held on Saturday, at the Council Office, Cambridge. Present: Messrs. W. P. Chepmell, J. Mills, D. Murphy, W. L. C. Williams, N. I. Hunt, and E. W. llanmer.
Repairs to Tk Akoha-Shaftesbury Road. —Correspondence was read between Mr. Cox and the comity clerk on this matter, Mr. Cox having offered to pay one-third of cost of spreading the stuff taken from the drains. It was resolved that Mr. Cox be informed that the Council sees no reason to alter the decision arrived at at the last meeting with reference thereto.
County Road through Gordon Special Settlement. —The chairman of the Association renewed the application and offer contained in his letter of the 10th March last re repairs to this road. It was resolved that the Council agrees To grant the application, and will upon receipt of the amount (£4O) promised by the Association, at once commence those parts of the work which are most urgent. Mokiunsyille -Te Aroha Road.Mr. miner reported that he had inspected that portion or this road complained of by Mr. Buttle, and that it was advisable to at once do certain repairs thereto. It was resolved that the necessary repairs be done at once. Koad Though Mangapouri.—The Auckland Agricultural Company wrote agreeing to the closing of this road, where it runs through or joins the boundary of their property. It was resolved " That the Council offer to close the existing road and exchange same with Mr. Northcroft for that recently laid .nit through his property by Mr. Rich."' Cambridge- Road.—The Tauranga County Council wrote asking the Council to make that portion of this road lying within the Piako County fit for driving fat stock, and suggested that it be made wide enough to allow vehicles to be driven over it. It was resolved that the engineer be instructed to inspect this road from the bottom edge of the bush to the eastern boundary of the county, and to furnish at the next meeting 01 the Council an estimate of the cost of making it tit for travelling fat stock. Proposed Culvert.— The Public Works Department wrote agreeing to place a culvert under the line in the place suggested by the Council, provided the Council bears the cost thereof. The manager of Mr. Isaac Holder, property also wrote, in reference to the proposed drainage. The engineer was instructed to inspect the drainage referred to by Mr. Holden, and also to ascertain how far the drainage of the main road is obstructed by the railway line and to report at iftxt meeting.
Okoroire-Hot Springs Road.Mr. Isaacs wrote stating that he had paid the Auckland Agricultural Company the cost of fencing this road. The clerk was instructed to write to the company, asking if the company would dedicate the road free of cost to the Council upon completion of the survey. Miscellaneous.The tenderofC. Murphy, £12, for bridge at Maori Reserve, Gordon Special Settlement, was accepted. It was decided to write to the Tamahere Road Board, pointing out the dangerous state of two bridges on that portion of the main road from Cambridge to Te Aroha, known as the Victoria Road; also, that repairs are required to two cuttings in the direction of Tamahere, after leaving Victoria Road, and asking that the necessary repairs be effected without delay. The engineer was authorised to get the necessary repairs effected to the approaches to the Waiwera and Pirunui bridges. It was resolved that the chairman and Messrs. Brunskill and Williams, be a committee to enquire into the financial position of the Council, and the probable amount required during the ensuing year. The engineer was authorised to call for tenders for the more urgent works required upon the Gordon Settlement Road, and Messrs. Hanmer and Mills were appointed a committee to open and accept the same, on receipt of information from the county clerk that the subsidy promised by the Association had been lodged to the credit of the Council. The Council then went into committee of the whole to consider the question of Waiorongomai bridge.
