OUR CHAMPION SCULLER.
By the s.s. Tarawera there arrived from the South yesterday the champion Soulier of New Zealand, Charles Stephenson, who is on his way to Sydney, but intends to make about a fortnight's stay here, during which he will visit his relatives at the Thames. Stephenson was interviewed at Foley's Shakespere Hotel by a Herald reporter yesterday, and expressed himself very pleased with the result of his New Zealand tour, by which he had won the championship of the colony, besides taking part in the Champion Four-oared Gift Race at the Exhibition regatta, which was won by his crew. The considerable measure of success which has attended Stephenson's efforts in Sydney, and the excellent reputation which he has gained as a consistent " goer" have been previously mentioned in the Herald, and list of his previous performances given. Stephenson was yesterday inspecting the Waitemata Boating Club's shed, and went out for a spin tin his shell, but the water was too rough' for him to' give .a decent display of his powers. Since his (kbnt as a sculler Stephenson has been associated with Neil Matterson, And on his departure hence will assist the latter to get into form for his match for the championship with i Peter Kemp. - A project is on foot amongst ■:■'•! the local rowing men to get up an aquatic ; carnival on Lake Takapuua as a compliment 1 to Stephenson, who is, the first Aueklander i who has made his mark as a « professional ' sculler; and this fact alone, apart from the champion's personal merits, will doubtless cause a large attendance to witness the sport, while the future career of the young oarsman I amongst the" oraoks" on the other side will I I be watched with eager interest..
