RE IRONSAND.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—ln to-day's Herald we • read a letter from Mr. Enoch Hughes, manager of ■; the! Onehunga Iron Works, and through the medium of your most valuable paper we begto reply that : we accept his challenge and offer. Ho states he ■-: is " prepared! to allow any i man the use of ■ furnace, etc., with the consent of the directors of the company, to work the ironsand, and that he will be prepared to pay Is per lb for every pound-; of pure iron produced at. a price to compete with any imported here." We, the ; undersigned, beg to accept this offer, provided we. have, by the authority of the directors, the absolute use and control of furnace, etc., during our work, quite apart from other. in-« fluences to retard us, except. the appointed inspectors. In three weeks from this date,, if at Onehunga, or we will accept, the' challenge to be carried out under anfointed inspectors, at once, at the > Huntiy ronsand Iron Works. Our small plantbeing now complete, it would be done at less cost, owing to coal, etc., on the spot, to produce five or ten tons of pig iron quick.We are, etc., ■■-"• Minett and Jones, Huntiy Ironsand Iron Works.
