DEAD MENS GOLD.

The feature of the wills of 1989 is the important place held in the list by , landowners, titled or otherwise. The year has been a peculiarly fatal one for peers, but the list of wills includes the names of several peers who died in 1888, and does not include nine of those who died during the last four months :— PiJKRS. Earl of Leven and Melville .. ' - >.'£628,891 Karlof ItaUnor.. .. .. . .. .. 263 >^ Viscount Portmaii .. ~ .... •• '^'^ Lord Newboruu .. .. .. •• 2*0,292 Lady VVillotisbby d'Krosby .... .. »»7,U08 Lord Ashburtoii .. .. .. .. ~ a "!M!„ l/>rd Kvorsloy ■;«. .. ... .... .A,, LordDunsany .. .. .... . .. 13.-,884 Minor personalties were those of the Earl of Mahnesbury, £91,762} Duke of Buckingham, £79,042; Lord Mount Temple, £76,123 ; Earl of Effingham, £61,759 ; Earl of Orkney, £00,303; Marquis of Sly, £52,327 ; Earl of .Mar and Kellie, £46,522; Earl of Lucan, £44,600 ; Earl of Caithness, £32,811 Earl of (iranard, £31,573; Earl of Portarlington, £28,856 Lord Seaton, £28,161; Lord Teynham, £10,114 Lord Lifford, £7724; Marquis of Donegal!, £4997; and Earl of Devon, £2589. A peer's personal estate is usually insignificant compared with his reality ; so this list is sufficiently remarkable. The Earl of Leven, who heads the list, was an exception. He made his money in Williams and Deacon's Bunk, and was so much more a businessman than a squire that he deprived a brother of a large share of his Fortune for sending a son to Downing College, Cambridge, and so " unfitting him for business." Of wills net yet proved, large personalties may be looked for in the cases of Lord Addington, Lord Falmouth, and Lord Digby. OTHER LANDOWNERS.
