NEW FUEL PATENT.
SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENT. In connection with the experiments recently made in Sydney with Messrs. Chappell and Lockwood's process for treating relmctej ores,_ the Sydney Daily Telegraph of ta 4th instant says : —Saturday's proceeding caused increased interest, owing to the application of Rock's patent liquid fuel injector. The injection of a spray of tat vapour into a nrnace, so long as there was an absorbent, either in the shape of cinders or fire bricks, has been attempted onsevenl occasions, but failure has always result*! from the .difficulty of regulating the discharge from the jet. This Mr. Rock ha succeeded in doing, and by the economical arrangements of the jet it is claimed tint the cost of fuel is practically reduced to a few pence per day. To explain what- tha extraordinary heating power of the jet is, it may be remarked that the front of tie • furnace was made white hob by thejetirf the course of half an hour after injection. It is possible that this and similar inventions may so far be developed as to supersede coal as fuel on our steamships, and make an end of stoking in the tropics, tc the great relief of suffering humanity. By this process the smoke is entirely consumed, and the extraordinary heating power produced on so insignificant an amount of material is*truly marvellous.
