R.M.S.S. ZEALANDIA. On Saturday, January 4, the mail steamer Zealandia, Captain K. Van Oterendorp arrived in port from San Francisco, by way of Honolulu and Tutuila, after a good passage. She brought 5 cabin and 2 steerage passengers for Auckland, and lias 65 of both classes in transit for Sydney. She had S3 tons of cargo for Auckland and 574 tons for Sydney. Mr. 0. McLean, the purser, to whom" we are indebted for the delivery of late San Francisco tiles, reports of the trip : The Zealandia left San Francisco on December 14 at 2.55 p.m., aud passed the outer buoy at 4.30 p.m. On the trip across to Honolulu, moderate N.W. and N.K. winds and cloudy weather prevailed, and the Hawaiian capital was reached on December 21, at 1.25 p.m., and sailed the same day at 8.25 p.m. From the 22nd to the 27th, strong N.E. winds, rough weather, and plenty of rain was experienced. The steamer touched off Tutuila on the 29th at 6 a.m.. and thence to Auckland had light southerly winds and fine weather. The steamer promptly, on being berthed, began the discharge of her New Zealand freight, and at 2 p.m. she resumed her voyage to Sydney. Several additional passengers went by her from Auckland. Four days out from San Francisco the Zealandia passed the mail steamer Alameda, and on December 31, a three-masted schooner was sighted steering S.S. W.

THE BARQUE WAIMEA. At an early hour on Sunday, Jan. 12, the signal station at Mount Victoria gave notice of a barque being in the offuig. The tug Awhiua went out promptly to pick up the approaching stranger, and returned about S a.m. with "the New Zealand Shipping Co.'s vessel Waimea, Captain Pottinger, inward bound from London in tow, and conveyed her to an anchorage in the stream opposite the Queen-street wharf. The Waimea comes into port in a very clean and creditable condition, after having made a passage of 105 days. The voyage was not an eventful one, the only noteworthy incident being the loss of some of her upper spars during a sudden squall in the Southern ocean. Her cargo is a varied one of general merchandise, and is valued at £23,100. THE SHIP CANTERBURY. The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Canterbury anchored in harbour on Tuesday, 21st, from London, with a cargo of merchandise. The Canterbury is a tine iron vessel of 1245 tons, and is similar in construction to the Invercargill, so recently here. feeing fitted with extensive refrigerating apparatus. She comes into port in excellent condition both as regards her hull and rigging, and Captain McMillan and his officers and crew deserve credit for her taut and trim appearance after her lengthy voyage of 16,000 miles, which was accomplished in the time of 94 days. The Canterbury brings a full and varied cargo valued at £36\000, and her spacious accommodation has been the means of inducing a dozen passengers to make the trip to the colony by her. The voyage out, though uneventful was enjoyable, and the crew having a good band amongst them, several enjoyable concerts nwe held during the trip. The Canterbury visited Auckland about two years ago, and Captain McMillan is well-known in this port. With him sail the following officers :—Chief, Mr. James Rainy ; second, Mr. H. Phillips; third, Mr. T. G. Lanigan. PORT OF KAIPARA. The following are the arrivals and departures (foreign) during the quarter ended 31st December, 1889, from the Kaipara harbour :— Arrivals. McArthur and Co. island schooner Olive, Captain Ross, arrived in port from Samoa, Vavau, and Niue, having been about nine months absent from Auckland. During that time she has been engaged in trading between the various ports of the Tongan Archipelago and Samoa, and at times encountered very severe weather, but notwithstanding this and the treacherous anchorages in the coral seas, Captain Ross brings his schooner into port safe and sound. The Olive has a part cargo of copra, fungus, cotton, pearlshell, and sundries, and brings several passengers to Auckland. Captain Ross reports that she left Niue on December 20th, and experienced calms and light variable weather until making Cape Brett on January 6th. Thence to Tiri strong S.K. and N.W. gales were had with heavy seas and rainy weather. The death is announced of Captain Fenn, who commanded the Union S.S. Compauy's steamer Pukaki in fjbe Fiji trade, and was also for a long time ca>,sflin of the Beautiful Star on the New Zewtend coast. The deceased gentleman was an officer in H.M. navy, and held the rank of navigating lieutenant. Ho retired on half-pay a few years back, and came out to settle in New Zealand, taking service under the Union Company. Captain Fenn gained many friends by his genial and kindly manner, and his death will be deplored by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He leaves a widow and young family in the South. About 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, the Union S.S. Co.'s Island packet Wainui, Captain G. Crawshaw, arrived from an extended cruise to the Kermadec, Navigator, Fiji and Friendly Groups, bringing a number of passengers and a quantity of fruit, copra, sugar, etc. After discharging she did not remain long in port, taking her dsparture on the 15th, with a miscellaneous cargo. Mr. W. McMillan, recently chief officer of the barque Lurline, died on January 4, at a friend's residence in Wakefield-street, from consumption. Mr. McMillan was in a very weak state of health on his arrival here in the Lurline. The whaleship Petrel was at Bravo, Cape de Verde Islands, on November 3, refitting for a cruise for twelve months. Captain E. J. Reed still retains command of the vessel. The old whaling barque Splendid, which was recently in this port, has been fixed by Messrs. C. F. James and Co. to load timber at the Kaipara for Tasmania.
