COMMERCIAL.

New Zk.u.and Herald Office, Thursday evening. The Customs duties to-day amounted to £2530 15s 9-1. Business is very uneventful, and rather dull. Wo hear of no material change in prices. F.lemes and saltanas are perhaps a little tinner. Spot stocks are very light, and the Southern houses are more buyers than sellers. In cornsacks, the latest Calcutta reports are in favour of holders, the Jute Mill Association having fixed up a minimum rate as binding. The market is rather bare of rice, while at this season there is always some increase in the sale. .Sugar remains unaltered locally, but the latest Mauritius advices report a sharp advance, the' Bombay buvers having operated heavily at the late fall. This will tend to counteract the weakening inllence of extra .shipments being afloat for Australia and New Zealand. China sugars arc not coming forward plentifully. In the tobacco trade there is more disposition to take Juno. The Derby brand, However. still retains the bulk of the trade, but orders ate not as free as they used to be. Fairly good business is reported in box teas. The demand still keeps brisk for lowpriced China, buyers generally springing a little to secure. Owing to no tonnage being available for New York or London, and the Waimea space being all engaged, there is a temporary check in the flax market, but the Willow Bank is on the way from P.ockhampton to load here, and the arrival of the Canterbury is an assistance to the shipping firms in nroviding the much-needed requirement of snippers. In the metal trade prices are still hardening. Every home report bristles with argumentative points, justifying extreme confidence. The days of Starvation wages are evidently numbered. The mighty foicc of trade unionism is being powerfully wielded, and demands for mote wages and shorter wording hours are mostly met or compromised after a stubborn light between Labour and Capital. Money is also rising, as is usually the case after a speculative era like that which lias existed for the la* two years. China is attracting great railway schemes, and the demands tor rails for this purpose is an important point in the maintenance of high prices for iron. In other home manufacturing industries the tendency of prices is upward. Maize is in good supply with off-wharf price from 2s yd to 2s lOd. We can hear of no business in milling wheat. Fowl wheat is scarce, with value 3s Id. Oats are reported firmer. We quote, shortfeed, 2s 2d: Danish, 2s Id. Potatoes, very plentiful at £2. Messrs. Dalgety and Co., of Sydney, report on the I.lth instant : — Millers are olferim: :is anil S.s Id p.t countrv -tatioa< for new stt.voir.-i wheat and Inlying freely, as smill growers who are threshed v>iu are content with thi* figure. We do nut think, however, that lara« grown;; with their bulk well stacked anil thatch>*l will lie inclined to accept this tisjute ititt yet. Thy daily iinre;;-iim revelations of rust in victoria and S uth Australia are li coming much more serious than wa» at lit»t anticipated, and we are !-tri>iiy!y of (.pinion that although we shall imt suffer to the ".uiie extent as the other colonies, it «111 have a veiy serious influence ii|)i>n returns ami prices to the grower. The threshing lesults in Kiigl.md and other European centres are not up to tlin estimates, so that we feel sure valutas will not >:<) below present Kngii-h quotations, but strongly point to a steady upward tendency in the near future. Our New "/-.aland and Ta-ina.nl in correspondents inform us that the stauditig crops are looking well, and the former will have, as usual, a large quantity for export, but will luo» to Kurope a- her outlet. In ia>e of any requirements in this market for Xew Zealand wheat it is to he hoped that exporters will not make the grave error of last season of putting ridiculous reHci-yes on their consignments but be content to ship for sale at bust obtainable prices. It is of course at the present moment (juite a matter of conjecture, hut we feel sure that every circiim.su.nce points to a considerable advance upon present prices. .Maize i-. keeping even value. Constant and steady supplier from the northern rivers and New Zealand fully meeting all requirements. Very little prospect of an advance. Jubilee is in everybody's mouth, both in town and country, and not a few traders express opinions that the holiday and sporting spirit is being rather too much cultivated, but as few of us will see another Jubilee, we suppose it is excusable to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the splendid colony that we are privileged to live in, by a series of what Lord Falmcrston used to cull our Isthmian games. hi the local produce market the prices remain unchanged, Best farmers' butter is 7d per lb wholesale; second quality, od; and third, 4d. Eggs are lOd per dozen wholesale, and Is per dozen retail. KAURI GUM MARKETS. Notwithstanding recent cables advising the London market being Hat, this market continues steady for ordinary gum, with a good demand at juices quoted below. East Coast continues scarce and firm. Supplies of all qualities for -2 days of January are about 280 tons. This is below recent average supply, but is partly attributable to irregularity of steamers from holidays and other causes. We quote :— Poor ordinary, 32s to 36s -. fair ordinary, 37s to 38s ; best ordinary, 395; and East Coast, 555. LIVE STOCK & PRODUCE MARKETS. AUCKLAND. MKSSILS.
