PROPOSED CABLE BETWEEN HONOLULU and SANFRANCISCO.
The following letter has been received by the Postmaster-General from the Premier of New Zealand, relative to; the desire of an American company to obtain from the Hawaiian Government exclusive rights for laying a cable between Honolulu and San Francisco :—" Premier's Office, Wellington, October 5, 1889. Sir, — have the honour to inform you that our Agent-General has reported that on the 6th August last the Agents-General for the colonies and the High Commissioner of Canada asked lord Knutsford to bring under the notice of the Marquis of Salisbury the fact that applications have been made by an American company . to the Hawaiian: Government for a grant ,of exclusive rights of laying a cable < between Honolulu , and . San Francisco, with the view of preventing, if possible, the granting of - any such privileges exclusively to any company for laying a cable between the Pacific Coast „ and the Sandwich / Islands. I presume you have already been' informed .of this; but my object in now addressing you is to ask whether it is not desirable that a strong protest should be made by the Governments of the Australian colonies, in which we would be glad to join, to the Secretary of State for the Colonies, in addition to that already made by our representatives in London. Will you., be good enough to communicate with the other colonies on the subject if you consider it desirable.— am, &c., H. A. Atkinson."
