AUCKLAND ATHLETIC CARNIVAL.

On Saturday afternoon last the Auckland Amateur Athletic and .'Cycle .Club held their twentieth carnival on the \ Domain Cricket Ground, when a first-class programme was carried out with great success. The fields in nearly all the events were large, and in both the foot and wheel races the . contests were keen and exciting. The Mile Championship did" not bring i out so > large . a number of starters as was ; expected, only > seven competing. A good race ensued for the first three laps, when J. W. Winks went to the front, and maintained ;> his lead jto the finish, 1 winning with a bit in hand in the good time,, of 4m. 44 l-sth s. The Two-mile Bicycle Championship was also a very interesting event, and A. G. Clarke, A. Buchanan, ana A. Howard all fought hard or.the victory, but at the I seventh round the first-named drew ahead , with a magnificent « spurt, to which his antagonists could not reply, and won by about 110 yards from Howard. The Ladies Bracelet produced a large field, and the > three /heats : and the final were all -excellent. contests, the s winner turning up in. M. H. Laird, who wa<» in great form, having previously annexed :) the 150 Yards Alaiden and 150 Yards Handicap. The Steeplechase was a trifle i tame, owing to the fact that the ; limit men had ; too much* start; allotted them, but as this is the first event of the . kind held for several years, the handicuppers had no : performances across country to guide j them in making a correct estimate of the competitors' relative merit. The arrangements throughout the day were perfect, and reflected great credit upon the committee. The ground was well roped off, and the crowd was thus prevented: from encroaching upon the course.' The events were started with great punctu-ality-by Mr. Edwards, and one or two laggards lost their chances of competing by being too late on the s field, while any attempts at breaking away or stealing" a ':■ march were sternly penalised/Messrs. James Coates, J. F. Logan and R. Garrett, acted as judges, and Mr. J. E. Cooke as timekeeper, with every satisfaction. The attendance was very large, fully 3000 persons being present. The scene was a very animated and picturesque one, the slope near the pavilion overlooking -the lawn being the vantage ground for; the majority of the great throng of spectators, a large proportion of whom were ladies attired in charming and seasonable costumes.' The committee displayed a graceful spirit of courtesy in providing afternoon tea for their lady patrons in a cool marquee, an attention which was greatly appreciated. Hunter's Artillery Band was present during *the afternoon, and played a variety of selections in their wellknown style. The details of the i*acing are as follow — i 150 Yards Maiden.— started in the first heat, and a good race resulted. -A. C. Collins, 1; J. Clarkson, 2; J. Mercer, 3. Howard then drew up, and the three were all close together for a lap, when Clarke . went ahead with a great spurt, and though . Buchanan made a game effort he could not keeu on terms with him. The latter : then went ahead, and Herrold : took second- place, but on h the S threequarter, Winks, who had been going well in a good position, came through his men well and kept five yards ahead of Herrold and Ellis, who were fighting for second place. McLean fell; and retired, and in ; the last round Ellis was beaten, » while Winks increased his lead. On the last half-lap Herrold spurted strongly but could not get on terms with Winks, who won easily.
