THE WANGANUI CRIMINAL SESSIONS.
[BY TKLEORAPH. —PBKSS ASSOCIATION.] Wanganui, Tuesday. His Honor the Chief Justice opened the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court today. The criminal calendar is rather heavy. Robert Stock well Hussell, arraigned on two charges of forgery, pleaded guilty. On the application of counsel, the prisoner wan admitted on probation under tho First Offenders' Probation Act, a settlor entering into a bond of £50 for him for six months. W. Baird Drummond pleaded guilty to two charges of larceny, an'l was sentenced to eight months' hard labour, both to run contemporaneously. Daniel Phillips pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing a horse, saddle, and bridle, and the case occupied the Court till the rising. In the case against C. H. Ashforth, for converting the moneys of Stephen Carrick to hie own use, he acting as agent, the prosecution fell through, owing to no indictment being sent in. It appears that Mr. Jellicoe refusod- at the last moment to attend the Court at Wanganui, so tho prosecutor liad no time to get other counsel. The prosecutor applied to tho Bench for an adjournment of tho case bill next sittings of the Supremo Court, but Hih Honor said he could not do this, as it waH the fault of the prosecutor's counsel. Later on His Honor told Carrick that as he had eent in no indictment, he was legally liable to a penalty of £100, bub, under the circumstances, his counsel being to blame, no doubt the Court would nob press for the penalty.
