OBSTRUCTING THE FOOTPATH.

TO THK EDITOR. Sir, —Your correspondent" X." has been misinformed re the "so-called permit," as he is pleased to style it, and as for its extent, meaning, concession, etc., I don't know what ho means ; but for the information of your readers and the ratepayers I give the facts of the case : Having no yard to receive goods in, I applied to His Worship the Mayor for a permit two days before the goods were delivered. Ho instructed Mr. Philips, Town Clerk, to give mo such for two days. On the goods being delivered, Sergeant McMahon and another constable came as far as the shop door, and not in a very polite manner ordered me "to move these goods at once." The next I heard about the matter was a summons, on receipt of which I went and informed Mr. Broham that I had a permit from His Worship the Mayor, to which ho replied, " It's not worth the paper it is written on." So much for the police not knowing. And as for a fair hearing, the thing was out of the question. Mr. C. D. Whitcombe, the chairman, roundly abused the Mayor for not knowing his duty, as he put it. As for vinegar and sugar, the police have given me their full of vinegar, and if such men as Mr. C. D. Whitcombe are appointed to interpret and administer law and justice it t will soon be a crime to live in the country. I have been informed that he would have fined me £2 if Mr. Wilding had agreed to it.—lam, &e., J. B. Hanuan.
