THE VICTORIAN TARIFF. Melbourne, Sept-ember 11. In the House of Assembly, the tariff alterations are under consideration. The increased duty on barley and oats • has been agreed to.
ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE. ' Sydney, September 11. A deputation waited on Admiral Fairfax to-day to urge the establishment of a branch of the Royal Naval Reserve in Sydney. It was stated thai; there are twelve thousand men in the colonies who are willing to join. The Admiral promised to bring the matter under the notice of the Admiralty. ADMIRAL FAIRFAX. Sydney, September 11. The farewell banquet to Admiral Fairfax last night was a brilliant success. In referring to the defences of the colonies, Admiral Fairfax said those of Victoria were most complete. New Zealand had accomplished much, and what had been done, was done well. New South Wales, he thought, was behindhand with her defences, while Queensland had done little or nothing, He paid a high tribute of praise to the naval and military force. In wishing them farewell, the Admiral expressed regret at his departure from Australia. FLOGGING. Sydney, September 11. The House of Assembly has rejected a Bill to abolish flogging.. , . SHIPPING.
