OUR FUTURE MAYOR.
% TO TJIK KDITOII.
Sm,— Kindly permit me to refer to Mio figures quoted l>y your correspondent "Ratepayer" in yesterday's issue, and to state that although I trusted to my memory in giving the amounts of the city overdrafts, yet they wero substantially correct. I have since searched the files of your paper, with the result that it is there reported at a meeting of the City Council held on the 15th December, 188(5 (when Mr. Devore lir.st took office as Mayor) that the overdraft was JCIM.OOO. Besides this there were some amounts for cemetery and other purposes, which would briny the total amount pretty near to what I previously stated. I also find on reference to the balances, a.s read by the Town Clerk at the meeting of the City Council held on the Bth August last, that the overdraft was £19,869. Surely the übovo is sufHcLonb. My reason for again troubling you is tho fact that it is Buch a rare thing (at tho present time) to find a public man capable of producing such extraordinary results when dealing with public money. The least we, as partakers of the benefits obtained, can give in return is honour to whom honour is due.—lam, &c., Pi;o Patria.
