MR. G. W. MURRAY'S "CHILDREN'S BOOK OF THE FARM."
TO THE KOITOR. Sir, —Whilst settlement of our . waste lands is steadily progressing, there is no man, I consider, deserves out- thanks more at the present time than Mr. G. \V. 2*l array, of Kaukapakapa, in bringing out in such a concise and practical form what lie modestly calls " The Children's Book of the Farm." Why, sir, it is a regular multum in parvo, suitable to old as well as young, and a better title for it would have been the " Beginner's Boole of The Farm," as there are so many : who go and try their hand at farming without any previous training. This little book I can highly recommend to their Study. By' carefully following its precepts success .will .be the result, and what is more, it will help more than anything else to drive away permanently the depression that has lately been upon us. I aui myself such a believer in rural occupation, that 1 should like to see small model farms started by the Government within a radius of a certain number of schools, to encourage in the pupils a taste for following this natural occupation. When Mr. Murray brings out a second edition he will excuse me, 1 know, in suggesting that under " Variety of Soils" he adds sandy soils, of which there are so many large tracts on the West Coast, as well as south of the WatJiato River. Mr. Murray is evidently a Freetrader. lam a Liberal Protectionist, and voted for Mr. Withy at the late election. But what we want, sir, to ensure our lasting prosperity, is settlement of the land made easy. Do away with the property tax, railway rates on the lowest scale, and federation of all the Australasian Colonies, and sweeping away, lock, stock and barrel, the whole of our present Government, reducing their numbers by at least one-half, and put in an entirely new lot; and if we don't go ahead by leaps and bounds then, 1 shall be surprised.—i am, &e., 151), Queen-street," T.
