SENSATIONAL AFFAIR IN MELBOURNE.
About 2.30 on Sunday morning, August 18, Constable Chisholtn, while on duty in Vic-toria-street, Melbourne, heard the report of firearms, and soon afterwards a spring-carfc, containing five men, was driven rapidly up the street. Chishohn, suspecting that something was wrong, attempted to stop the cart, but the men took no notice of his calls. He then run after the carfc, and when he gob near., a man fired a revolver ub him, fortunately missing his aim. lie had to give up the chase from fatigue. It was subsequently ascertained that the men had stolen the horse and cart from the Lynch Hotel, North Melbourne. They presented a revolver ab the stableman, whom they avroke by the noise. After the men had gone, the stableman called Mr. Lynch, and went in pursuit, but could find no traces of them. About five o'clock, the police found the iliorse and carb near the Carlton Refuge, tho horse being much exhausted. It is supposed tho horse and cart were taken to assist a burglary, bub the men were disturbed in making their escape when Chisholm ew them.
