AUSTRALIAN NOTES.
From .Sydney papers to hand we clip the following from " MartindaleV' notes :—
So far there has been nothing like brisk speculation over forthcoming events. Bernardo has been backed to win the ITfiwkesbury Handicap for about £2000; and there has been a slight run on Lockslev for the same event. At the present time the ruling favourite for the Hawkesbury Handicap is Bernardo at 7 to 1 ; 10 to 1 is offered about Lainoud aud Tourbillon, and 12 to i Locksley. About the Metropolitan, 10 to lon the field is the best offer. Silvertou is still favourite for the Melbourne Cup at 100 to 7. Though there has been a lot of good solid work done during the past week, there has been no sensational galloping. Cranbrook and Abercorn work together. The big horse makes a lot of noise, but gets over the ground in good style. Abercorn appears to lie well. Singapore is very forward, as also Rudolph, but the one which pleases me the best of the whole string is Sinecure. Old Arsenal, when he will gallop, moves as well as ever, and Raynor has him very well, while Wycombe was vastly improved by tiieenforeed " spell "he had late lastsenson. Melo3 and Merriment are both well. I don't suppose we shall see Aristocrat at the post for the Melbourne Cup, as there is something amiss just above one of his fetlock joints, und he has not been on the track for some days. Antieus looks well, also Manton, but The Doge will hardly be ready for our Derby. Carbine and Mentor are both said to be looking and going extremely well, the former especially so. The Hobartville Plate of 200sovs, run at Roseliill on the 17th ult., was won by Mr. Mclaughlin's ch c Correzc (by Newminster— Ouida), who started favourite, and beat J 6 others.
