"OPEN NIGHT' OF THE SAVAGE CLUB.
The members of the Auckland Savage Club gave an "open night" at the Choral Hall last night, and although rain fell very heavily at the time of assembling, there Has a large attendance of ladies, most fashionably dressed, while the gentlemen wore all in evening dress or Savage Club costume. The entertainment must have been somewhat of a novelty to the ladies present, for all the performers throughout were of " the opposite sex." The following was the programme : —Overture, orchestra ; song, "My Life for Thee," Mr. P. A. Edmiston ; interval; recitation, Mr. F. E. Brut mo; piano duet, Messrs. J. B. Macfarlane and A. Bartley; song, Two Grenadiers," Mr. W. Manson ; interval; recitation, " The Rival Curates," Mr. A. Taylor ; chorus, "Gaudeamus Igitur," members; refreshments ; solection, orchestra ; song, "My Friend," Mr. L. Coupland; recitation, from "Much Ado About Nothing," Mr. A. Forrest ; quartette (instrumental), members ; reading, Mr. F. Montague. Mr. James Knox acted as conductor. Ib will be seen that there were several "m----tervals," which gave an opportunity for promenading and for friendly chat amongst the audience. Mr. Manson was encored in his song of " Two Grenadiers," and responded by singing "Drinking." Mr. A. Tayler's recitation of "The Rival Curates," from "The Bab Ballads," was given with clever histrionic effect. Mr. Tayler was compelled to appear again, and confessed that he had nothing prepared for an encore. The chorus, " Gaudeamus Igitur," was sung with verve and spirit by a number of the members of the Club. The orchestral
selection which followed was " The Bohemian Girl," and the familiar music was admirably rendered. Mr. W. L. F. Chambers was put down for a song, bub ib had to be omitted, as he had a sore throat. The entertainment concluded with the Savage Club chorus, a piece written by Mr. Bilbrough, and sung to the music of Buttercup's soncr in " Pinafore."
