THE AUCKLAND FISH MARKET.

The amended by-laws for the Auckland Fish-market were submitted to the Harbour Board yesterday. They have already appeared in the Herald. In regard to the Fish Market, a letter signed by a number of fish hawkers was received. They approved of regulation No. 1 of the by-laws for the Fish Market, but they objected to the permission proposed to be sriven by the second regulation, as they considered that influence would be brought to bear on the Board. They also suggested that no person having any interest in the fish trade should have any authority in the Fish Market, that all fish be put up in lots to suit four hawkers, and that all bona fide .hawkers be served first, so as to supply the public. Two fishermen waited upon the Board and said they objected to the duty of one penny per dozen upon certain kinds of fish, but otherwise were satisfied with the rules.

The by-laws were considered, and clause 4 was amended to read as follows:—"On all fish landed on any wharf in the harbour of Auckland, the owners or person landing the same shall pay to the Harbour Board for landing charges : On schnapper, fresh and smoked, Jd per dozen of twelve ■ mullet and crayfish, Id ; kawhia, gurnet' flat-fish, ; all other large fish, Id. A commission of five per cent, shall be paid on all fish sold by auction in the fishmarket." Clause 6 was altered to read :— " Fish shall mean and include all fish other than cured or preserved fish contained in tins, cases, or barrels,* but this by-law shall not extend or apply to fish carried by hand by any person for his own use or consumption." With these alterations the by-laws were adopted. It was decided to place a flagpole with halyards and flags at the Fishmarket building, and to invite applications for the position of manager.
