Ib is rumoured that Sir Harry Atkinson •will contest the Wellington city electorate at the next general election. A cablegram received at Punedin reports the death of Mr. Lewis, an ex-lKinedin resident, at Sandhurst, at the age of 105. The returns from the City Abattoirs for the last nine months show the receipts to have been £320 15s 3d, and the oxpendituie £15S 4* lOd. Captain Edwin advised yesterday as follows at noon:—"North-east to east and south. Heavy gale and heavy rain, Glass will further fall.'' The Bay of Plenty Times claims Miss Auckland, who was so successful in her performance in " lolanthc, 1 as a former resident in that town. There were in the lock-up last night four persons on charges of drunkenness ; Joseph Cope, for obscene language; and John Thompson, for vagrancy. Mr. Fred. Beaumont, advance agent of the Simonsen Opera Company, was a passenger from the South to Auckland, yesterday. The company lie represents will open in Auckland about the sth August. Mr. T. Morrin leaves for Sydney to-day fcy the B.s. Wairarapa, for the purpose of endeavouring to eflect. a sale of the fine herd of Herefords belonging to the estate of the late Hon. J. Williamson. Mr. Morrin takes a trial shipment of 50 head with him by the Wairarapa. Ensilage is proving a great help to cattle Cien in India. It saves the stock from starvation in hot weather, when the grass is dried up. The native grasses make good ensilage. Cattle fed on such ensilage, with one pound daily of cocoanut pomace, are always fit for the butcher. It is anticipated that the new offices and Fire Brigade station of the Newton Borough Council will be ready for occupation within a month. The design is neat, and ornamental, and the building is quite a feature in tie landscape, at the corner of Williamson's Avenue and Rose Road.
As showing the success of a dairy company in England, it is stated that the London, Gloucester, rind North Hants Dairy Company (Limited) had paid a dividend on the year's working at. the rate of l.'i per cent. The pro for the year amounted to £4945 odd, as against £3784 tor last year. Mr. Walter Kerr. 8.A., of the New Zealand University, has passed the examination for 8.A., with mathematical honours, at the University of Cambridge, after two years' residence, his New Zealand course beinsx allowed to count as one year. Mr. Kerr is a son of -Mr. W. Kerr, of Rainarama, Drury. A scheme for improving he fowls of the poor peasantry in southern and western Ireland is meeting with hearty response among English poultry-breeders. The idea is to have these fanciers send their surplus stock to one party to be by him distributed among deserving peasants. This is a private enterprise. The following is the state of Her Majesty's prison, Auckland, for the week ending July "20, ISS9 :— On remand, 1 male; awaiting trial, o males : boys. - : penal servitude, 41 males. 3 females; hard labour, 65 males, 15 females : default of bail, S males : received during the week, S males, - females : discharged, S males, 3 females ; total in prison, 1-0 males; IS female?.
The nsual Gospel temperance meeting *ras held in the Masonic Hall, Karangahape Road, on Sunday evening. Mr. George Knight presided. Mr. R. J. Souster gave an excellent address from the words "Is there not a cause," from which he showed that the cause of the evils flowing from drunkenness proceeded from the drink. The attendance was very good. Just before the close of the meeting the Rev. I'. Mason came with a petition to the Board of Education re temperance teaching in schools, which was largely signed.
