SAVINGS ON APPROPRIATIONS.

[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Wednesday. The following general statement of savings on appropriations (and excess on particular items) may be relied on as approximately correct. The total savings on appropriations of the consolidated fund amounted to £117,369, and the excesses to £38,079. Next, as to Public Works Fund: Under part 1 the savings on the appropriations amounted to £123,686, namely, railways, £3038 ; roads, £78,210 ; goldnelds waterraces, £700; native land purchases, £3726 ; telegraph extension, £4865 ; public buildings, £15,269 ; lighthouses, harbour works, and defences, £4767 ; rates on native lands, £11,196; thermal springs, £65; expenses of raising loans, £1241. On the other hand, £959 more than the appropriations was expended on immigration, £760 for departmental charges, £2627 in grants in aid of roads. Under part 2 there was a saving of £49,195 in railways, and £935 in native land purchases, but an excess of £1788 in expenses of raising loans. Under part 3 there was a saving of £72,782 in railways, but an excess of £4083 in expenses of raising loans, and another excess of £8414 on certain railways (namely, Grey-mouth-Hokitika, £1000; Otago Central, £5835; Catliu's River, £933; surveys of new lines, £585). The total savings on appropriations of the Public Works Fund, therefore, amounted to £246,602, and the excesses to £18,033. LIABILITIES AGAINST ORDINARY REVENUE. The following is a comparative statement extending over the past seven years, and may bo relied upon as approximately correct :—1889: Total liabilities under ordinary revenue account, £142,338, as against £126,184 for 188$; £181,452, for 1887; £190,283, for 1886 £161,967, for 1885 ; £166,757, for 18S4 ; £176,530, for 1883 ; and £164,394, for 1882. The outstanding liabilities under the land fund account were £10,213, whereas in the seven previous years these amounted respectively to £24,037, £44,717, £49,999, £33,577, £27,440, £25,189, and .£37,502.
