" CLERGYMAN " AND " ANOTHER CLERGYMAN."
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Without wishing to enter into the discussion that has arisen on the temperance question, will you kindly allow me to protest, through your columns, against the signatures attached to at least two of the letters—viz., "Clergyman" and ' 'Another Clergyman." The strong opinions which they have advanced in these letters are clearly not such as they hold in virtue of their office ; and I would venture humbly to suggest that, if at any time in future t hey may feel bound to publish anything to which they do not wish to attach their ames, they do not select a nom de. plume which foists the burden of their individual private opinions on to the clergy generally. —I am, &c.. Isaac Richards. St. Mark's Parsonage, Remuera, May 20, ISS9. [We cannot understand what the Rev. Mr. Richards wants. The letters were written by clergymen, so that there was no fraudulent pretence in the matter. We do not see that they have "foisted the burden of their individual private opinions on to the clergy generally." We have not heard anyone suspect Mr. Richards as being the writer of the letter signed "Clergyman."— Ed.]
