FATAL ACCIDENT AT MAUNGATUROTO.
I HAVE to report that a fatal accident occurred on Wednesday, the 17th instant, to Mr. Angus McLennan. It appeared the .J W unfortunate man was assisting to jack a log of timber into the river. 1 He 'stood on I ' - a lower one, and when this was slightly I- moved, the upper one fell and jammed him fast against, another,;in fact, almost cut him •in two. He died the same day, about five : hours after receiving the injury, at the house of Mr. H. Cullon. It is much to be regretted that those whose duty it is to put . the timber into the river, do so in so rough ■ - >:> a fashion. The river is narrow where the timber is thrown in, and when I last saw It, it appeared to be full of logs just there. * The bank also was fully covered with tim- ' ber, some of the logs appeared to be almost - at right angles with others, and altogether " it would appear that very little care is • • taken to put the logs into position to take the river without "'assistance and considerable risk. The fatal result lam recording is, so I jim informed, the result of this carelessness.— [Own Correspondent, April 19.]
