PAINTING LOFTY BUILDINGS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — The present system of using enormous long ladders from the footpaths at the Mutual Provident Society's offices is not only very dangerous work, with an insecure holding for the artisan at work, but is also very dangerous to passers. Supposing ail unfortunate man slipped, the chances are the ladder would also go ! and it is very likely more than one life would be sacrificed. Is there not some better system in vogue by guarded platforms duly lowered as required. Surely, it is time this old-fashioned plan was dispensed with. I have heard of the story of a man who was painting a ship slung on a platform, and some men leaving required a boat unfastened from the deck, and sung out, " Let go the painter !" Some landlubber thinking he was making himself useful, let go the unforunate man who was painting, • and he was drowned ! Let us hope we are able to improve on this possibility. Alteration is urgently needed.—l am, &c., Pro Bono Publico.
