The South Australian Government insists that the new Governor shall pay Customs duty on his belongings. The only prisoner in the lock-up last evening was James Gorman, on a charge of using abusive language. The series of evangelistic addresses at St. George's Hall was continued last evening by Mr. Dyer, of England. Haere Te I'ene, who lies at Napier gaol under sentence of death for the murder of the Pook familv, will be hanged. The Mayor of Wellington entertains Lord Onslow at »i ball in the drill-shed. Iho building will be lit with electricity. Mr. Hogben, one of the inspectors under the Christ-church Board of Education, has been appointed head-master of the Timaru High School. A proposal has been made to reduce the salaries of the Christchurch School Inspectors to £500 each and pay their own travelling expenses. The station residence on W yndlays, Southland, the property of the Hon. R. Campbell, was burned last Monday. Insurance, £60 in the South British. Intelligence has been received in town privately that a young man named .McLean was killed by the fall of a tree at Waipu. The accident is said to have happened on Wednesday last. Deceased was unmarried. The picnic given annually by the proprietors of The Argus, the Australasian, and the Australasian Sketcher to the employes and their families was held recently at. the Caulfield racecourse, when the guests numbered about 1000. Now that the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board have got the Refuge, at Epsom, fairly under weigh, tenders are being invited, through Mr. E. Bartley, architect, up till Monday, the Gr.h prow, for the erection and completion of a nurse's home. A handsome bouquet is being prepared by Mrs. Robinson, of Parnell, which is to be presented to Lady Onslow at the reception of the Governor, Lord Onslow! This lady won the prize for bouquets at the late Horticultural and Flower Show. An old-style cricket match was held in Lancaster Park, Christchurch, yesterday, in aid of the fund of Herrick's City Mission Home, but it did not attract a large attendance. All the players dressed in the style of last century, and though a pleasant day was spent no great profit was made. The City Council disposed of the business before them yesterday evening " in the shortest time on record." They sat in conclave for exactly one hour, and on learning that all the business had been disposed of they seemed quite bewildered, and it was some time before they left the Council chamber. The ranks of editors have often been recruited from the pulpit, but it is seldom the compliment is returned, and the church gets a preacher from among those who have ivielded the scissors. Mr. J. H. Zillman, lately editor of the Darling Downs (Q.) Gazette, has, however, been licensed to officiate as a Church of England clergyman. We wonder (says a Melbourne contemporary) if Mr. James Service ever visits the house he occupied in South Melbourne before the dawn of his greatness. The house is still standing in Dorcas-street, a small weatherboard structure, no great distance from the early home of David Syme (proprietor of the Age), which was much smaller. On Easter Monday an excursion will be made to the Thames by the s.s. Rotomahana in order that an opportunity may be afforded to Aucklanders to join in the Friendly Societies' Demonstration and Sports, to be held at the mining town. The Rotomahana will leave Auckland at seven a.m. on Easter Monday, returning from the Thames at midnnight.
