WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[l!Y TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Thursday. TTIE CONDEMNED MAORI. Ax Executive Council was held this afternoon, at which the Premier (representing the Governor), tho Hon. Mr. Fergus (Minister of Justice), the Hon. Mr. Mitchelson (Minister of Public Works) were present. Tho principal business, I understand, was to receive a report of the learned Judge ' who {(resided at the trial of the Maori indicted for the murder of Mr. and Mrs. Pobk. The report - as considered, and a •decision was arrived at that the extreme :sentence of the law should be carried out. The date of the execution has not, however, been fixed. The final decision is left in the • h.'iipds of His Excellency the Governor. .1 ihaH'e heard Unit a petition is being prepared, praying that the Crown would exercise its prerogative of clemency in this co sc. THE BEER DUTY PROSECUTION'S. The question of the remission of fines was considered by the Executive Council to-day, but no decision was come to, and the matter was hold over until after the Easter holidays. LAKE TAKAPUNA. The district round this lake is closed against shooting native game by proclamation. AUCKLAND LUNATIC ASYLUM. Dr. Thomas Badford King is gazetted Medical Superintendent of the Auckland Lunatic Asylum, I'icc Dr. Cremonini, resigned. The appointment of Dr. King dates from May 1, 1889. MELBOURNE EXHIBITION. The following additional awards are announced :—First order of merit (works of art) to L. J. Steele ; third order of merit (for fibres) to L. D. Nathan and Co.; first order of merit (photography) to G. I). Valentine; honourable mention (jewellery), S. Danneford anil Co.
