WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.

[BY TELEGKAPH. OW>" CORP.ESI'OXDE>-T.] Wellington, Saturday. STEWART'S island tin MINES. The preliminary report of the Geological Survey Department baa been forwarded to he Minister of Lands. It is a report in letail, describing the configuration of the rround about Mount Pegasus and Smith's /reek, where the seam of tin is found, dr. Alex. McKay is by no means enthui iastic as to the value of the results likely iid be obtained. The alluvial wash which I, contains the tin is not more than 14 inches lin thickness, and nob likely to yield tin in 3 -payable quantity for any lengthened period. (The eastern side of the island, south of |?ort Adventure, is principally granite, and ijart- of the west side is of a similar formation. In the higher grounds the I'ocka are quartzibe and mica. Tin has ken found there of somewhat coarser rrain than that in the alluvial deposits, iut the prospects are good, and the results bay prove to be satisfactory after some nore work is done. The miners on the gound are for the most part confident of satisfactory results. The works, however, have not sufficiently far advanced to enable the geologist to say that tin is present in parade quantities, but the presence of tin in various parts of the island is established. iirj Alexander Mackay, the assistant geologic, hinks that encouragement should be gideato carry on the prospective claims to tbf establishment of a definite result, so a3 to determine the value of the field. SB OOROK OKEY's LAW PRACTITIONERS ACT. /Yesterday there was quite a scene in Court between Superintendent Thomson add two lawyers engaged on behalf of the Woman Thorpe, charged with malpractices « a midwife. One lawyer was lavish of his contempt of Superintendent Thomson, Hale the other charged the Bench of /ustices with a "density" for which *he learned counsel was not responsible. Buperinter.dar.it Thomson is defended this vening by the papers, which recommend the committal of all persons guilty of such conduct under sections 313 and 314 of the Justices of the Peace Act. The Times makes the following suggestion :—" The principle of Sir Geo. Grey Bill for widening the portals of admission to the practice of thy law has several times been emphatically approved by the House of Representatives, although the measure has hitherto always been blocked at its last stages, and to has never become law. One objection hitherto effectively raised has been that to phrow open the profession would be to lower it in character and reputation, bub unless lawyers ' mend their manners' people will say, and say truly, thai/ 10 outsiders admitted to practice under .he proposed new law could possibly sehave worse than do some of the regular members of the bar under the old regime. As for the practical utility of this beargardenism no rational being will venture to pretend that a client)is aided in the smallest degree by rude and indecorous behaviour on the part of his counsel." ITBW.. ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY. The Post was very much alarmed at the riews received by cable, that the interest of the lite Sir W. Pearce was about to be transferred to Mr. E. S. Dawes. The paper expression to its regret in a sub-leader, under the heading : —" An alarming report." a subsequent telegram denying the rumo Qr tranquilised the editorial nerves. Ihe contingency dreaded was regarded as a disaster for Wellington. • the: railway commissioners. Thei. have been inquiries set on foot by the Commissioners as to the probable cost of a larj„ building on the reclaimed ground in thenar 0 the present Government build- - - 'Ihe proposed building is intended bo aervs th ; purpose of a general station and offices fc, tnQ w hole of the officials in Wellington.
