MAJOR HAMLIN AND THE LATE DISTICT SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATION.
TO THE EDITOR. '* Sie, —I enclose copy of a letter which Is have received from Major Hamlin; as it is a matter of public interest, I shall feel much « obliged if you will be kind enough to insert it in your next issue.—-I am, &c., Samuel Luke. Otahuhu, 29th March, 1889. * Waiuku, 25th March, 1889." To S. Lake,, Esq.. Otafiuhu. Dear Permit me to thank you for correcting a statement which I made during my addresses to the electors to the effect" that tne headmaster of the College and Grammar School had set the papers for the late scholarship examination." I may say that I made tne statement on what I considered sufficiently strong proof. I am, however, pleased to learn that the papers were set by two gentlemen outside tho College altogether, and if I have caused a moment's pain So anyone I apologise for doing bo. When I was informed of the matter I thought it so outrageous and unfair a proceeding that I promised to mention it during my addresses. I did so, desiring to make the matter public, and to check a grave encroachment on the primary system of education— for the purpose of injuring any one person —but solely on public grounds. X am thankful that, whilst I erred in making the statement, it has afforded you the opportunity of placing the matter in its true light .before the public, and informing them who set the papers. Your action will allay considerable irritation and restore confidence. You can use this letter in any way you think just and right.—l am, &c., E. Hamlin.
