THE CHINESE IN NEW ZEALAND.
SINGULAR REPORT. [BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington", Wednesday. The Evening Post says :—"A few months ago we mentionod that the Chinese in Wellington had received a communication from the Emperor, enjoining thorn not to enter into any business arrangements which would tend to retard their speedy return to the Flowery Land, should a proclamation to ' come back' be issued, as the result of the difference of opinion which at present exists between the Australian colonies and the Government at Pekin 011 the subject of immigration. We now learn that another official document has just been received by the Celestials of this district impressing upon them the necessity of bearing in mind the injunction in the previous communication, and stating that it is quite possible they will be called upon to either return to the land of their birth or remain where they are and cease to be regarded as Chinese subjects. A gentleman who is taking a deep interest in the movements bf the Chinese in Wellington informs us that since the last communication has come to hand many of the men have become deeply concerned at the position of affairs, and are disinclined to enter into new business arrangements."
Upon inquiry we find that nothing is known in Auckland about this supposed document. Mr. Thomas Quoi declared that the report is nob true, for he would cortainly have heard ,of any sueh document had io been received.
