The Northern Co.'s s.s. Gairloch, _ from Waitara, arrived early yesterday morning. The Union S.S. Co. s Penguin arrived off the Manukau bar about 3 a.m. yesterday morning, and crossing safely, steamed up the channel and passed Puponga Point. Captain Bernech then steered for the anchorage ground and kept the lead line going. About daylight though the sounding had denoted plenty of water immediately previously the steamer grounded on a small bank about nine miles from the Onehunga Wharf, of whose existence the captain was unaware. The engines were reversed and all efforts made to get the vessel off. but without avail. On information of the mishap reaching Onehunga the s.s. Manukau was sent down to the Penguin, leaving the wharf at about 5 o'clock to bring up the passengers. The tide yesterday afternoon was somewhat lower than in the morning, and though a second effort was made to move the steamer it was, like the first, unavailing. Captain Bernech hopes, however, to be able to get clear from the unwelcome obstruction to is progress by this morning's tide.
