AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

The Auckland City Council met yesterday evening. The Mayor presided, and there were also present : Messrs. Davies, Warren, Fan-ell, Lennox, Goldie, Grey, Crowther, Holland, Atkin, Smith, Dignan, Swales, Cooper, Evans, Lavers, Hewson, Patterson.

Drainage.—Mr. D. S. Cattanach wrote urging that a drain be laid in Hepburntreet, between Selwyn and Picton Streets. It was agreed to comply with the request. Mr. William Thome wrote protesting that he was not responsible for the leakage of a drain in Lincoln-street, in respect of which notice had been served upon him. The matter was referred to the Ward Foreman for examination.

Reduction of Rent.—Messrs. J. J. Craig, 11. Hewin, J. M. Alexander (on behalf of Messrs. Buchanan) wrote, requesting reduction of rents of various allotments. Mr. W. H. Connell also wrote, offering to surrender a lease. The letters were referred to the Finance Committee.

Sale of Property.—The New Zealand Frozen Meat Company applied that the sale of the property in Emily Place be postponed for a year. The request was granted. Thanks.—A letter was received from the University Senate, thanking the Council for the use of the rooms in the Municipal Building during the session of that body. Lease of Allotment. —Mr. A. Mennie, on behalf of the authorities of St. Peter's Presbyterian Church, wrote, asking upon what terms the Council would lease the allotment at the corner of Ponsonby Road and Hopetoun-stroet, as they proposed to build a church there.

Water Supply.—The Board of Education requested that a charge of £2 2s for one quarter's water supply at the Girl's High School Building be remitted, as the premises had been closed for some time. The application was declined. Domain.—The use of the Domain Cricket Ground on Saturday, April 6, was granted to the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club.

Manning-streei' Bridge.— The Eden Terrace Road Board requested that the approaches to the city end of ManningStreet bridge be completed. The letter was referred to the ward members.

Permits.—A request from Mr. R. J. Ross, for permission to roof with shingles an addition to his house in Sarsfield-sbreet, was referred to the Streets Committee. The New Zealand Frozen Meat Co. requested permission to erect iron buildings upon certain reclaimed property which they intended to lease. The letter was referred to the Legal Committee. Poxsonby Reservoir No. 2.—The Finance Committee reported : —Memo, from city solicitor re payment to Maguire on account l'onsonby reservoir No. 2 (referred with power to act) : Your committee has instructed that the sum of £581 6s 3d be paid to Mr. Maguire in full of deposit, interest, and balance of contract, thus leaving £100 still in Council's hands in lieu of non-com-pletion of wall by Mr. Maguire for Ponsonby No. 2 reservoir. The report was adopted. Streets Committee. —The Streets Committee recommended :—I. Letter from Edward Mahoney and Son re permit roadway from Hobson to Nelson streets : Your committee recommend that the request be granted, on condition that the road asked for be permitted as a right-of-way, subject to the construction of the right-of-way and kerbs being to the satisfaction of the engineer ; and, on the other usual conditions, i.e., that no house or building be erected having a frontage to the right-of-way, or the sole entrance to any house from the right-of-way, and that a gate be erected at the entranco to the right-of-way and there maintained, and the right-of-way maintained in good repair to the satisfaction of the city engineer. 2. Petition from residents of Sheehan-sbreet re gully drainage : Consideration deferred for ward members' report to committee. 3. Petition from ratepayers in Karangahape Road re street watering: Your committee recommend the watering of Karangahape Road once in the morning by means of the hose so long as the water supply permits. 4. Memo, from engineer re repairs Ponsonby engine : Your committee recommend that the work be done at a cost of £18, in terms of engineer's report. This report was adopted. Legal Committee.—This committee recommanded : —l. Memo, from Town Clerk re ventilation of Art Gallery: Your committee recommend the ventilating of Art Gallery as. per report of sub-committee (Messrs. Hewson and Holland) at a cost of £IS. 2. Letter from T. J. Mclvor re cemetery by-laws : Your committee recommend that Area 111 be shown on plan where bodies may be interred, and for which the right in petpetuity has not been purchased, and which may be purchased within two years. The report was adopted. City Market.—The Finance Committee reported, re City Market, memos, from Town Clerk and engineer, re repairs, &c.: Your committee report that on the 22nd of February, the City Market was leased by auction for a term of three years to Mr. Thomas Slater, at a rental of £75, being an increase of £10 per month ; and your committee recommend that the Council instruct the engineer to prepare plans and specifications for repairs to interior of the Market, as suggested by memo, from clerk of works, dated February 21, and with power to the Finance Committee to accept tender. The recommendation was agreed to. Nelson-street Formation. —The North Ward members reported Letter from Henry Hartnoll, re Nelson-street formation : The North Ward members, having revisited the premises, recommend that the sum of £10, without prejudice, be paid to Mr. Hartnoll. This recommendation was agreed to. Works in Ponsonby.—The Ponsonby Ward members reported as follows : Letter from S. H. Webb, repairs to Hackett-street: We recommend that the work be done by the Ward foreman. Petition from residents Heme Bay Road : We recommend that as the foot of Heme Bay Road is in a dangerous condition, a barricade be erected as requested. The report was adopted. " Condolence. —On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to send an expression of condolence to Mrs. Stockwell, widow of the late Dr. Stockwell. The question of appointing to'tho vacant position of health ollicer was referred to the Legal Committoo. • . . „ Donation to the Art Gallery.— A vote of thanks was accorded to the Mayor, who had presented to tho Art Gallery a painting

by Mr. Blomfield, "Castle Rock, Coromandel."

fiOJBSON-?niK£T Bridge.—A report was received from the engineer in respect of the proposed bridge at the foot of Hobsonstreet, at a cost of £900, and it was resolved to prepare plans for the work. Tenders.—The following tenders were received for works at the south side of Cook-street: —E. Murphy, £345 ; T. Regan, £308 10s ; Kilty and Somers, £392 5s 7d ; B. Berry, £365 12s ; McGee and Forrest, £374 9s ; M. McSheffrey, £330 12s 4d; W. Bolton, £306 6s lOd; Sheldon and Co., £360 ; Lovett and Co., £291 13s Id. The tender of Lovett and Co. was accepted. No tenders were received for the lease of the Council's paddocks. Clifton Road.—lt was resolved to form Clifton Road to the permanent level, as recommended in a report from the engineer.

Sale-street. — The engineer reported with reference to Sale-street. Toprevent the water from running on to Mr. Henderson's land it would be necessary to build a manhole. The letter was referred to the ward members.

Tire Poudrette Works. — Mr. Grey moved, "That the resolution passed by this Council on the 6th day of December, 1888, be rescinded, and that other arrangements be made for a depot for the city nightsoil before the end of the present contract." Mr. Crowther seconded the motion pro forma. The Mayor explained that the deeds had not yet been .signed. Mr. Grey 'said that in that case he would withdraw the motion. Mr. Atkin hoped that the matter would not be delayed until the present contract expired. Mr. Goldie said that the Waitemata County Council intended to hold a special meeting to consider the subject, and a good deal would depend upon the course pursued by that body. Mr. Cooper said that delay in the matter might seriously interfere with the contractor's business. Mr. Crowther thought that it would be a mistake if the the Council were weak-kneed in this matter. Mr. Grey's motion was lost. The Avondale Road Board, and Messrs. M. Reed and W. A. McCaul wrote protesting against the establishment of a nightsoil depot at New Lynn. The letters were received.

AsmALT Works.—Mr. Evans moved, "That the engineer prepare plans and specifications for asphalting footpath on south aide* of Patteson-street; also for crossing from Billing ton's corner to junction of Victoria and Wellesley streets." After some discussion the motion was lost on the following division For: The Mayor, Messrs. Lennox, Holland, Smith, Dignan, Swales, Cooper, and Evans. Against: Messrs. Davies, Warren, Farrell, Goldie, Grey, Crowther, Atkin, Lavers, Hewson, and Patterson.
