UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of the University College Council book place yesterday. Present:— Sir G. Maurice O'Rorke (in the chair), Justice Gillies, Sir Frederick Whitaker, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Devore), Colonel Haultain, Mr. E. Heeketh. CoRRESPONDKNCK. — A letter was read from Mr. W. Porcival making an offer to become lessee of the land formerly belonging to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Ellerslie. Resolved that the offer be declined. The Gillies Scholarship.Letter read from Miss Jane D. Grant, recently elected a Gillies scholar for one year, in which she claimed that the scholarship should extend for three years. It was resolved that the Council, having carefully considered the question when the examiner's report was presented, on which occasion- the scholarship was granted, sees no sufficient reason for departing from their decision. Lectuekk on French Language and Literature — letter wag received from Mr. C. D. Whitcombe proffering his services as lecturer on the French language and literature. It was resolved to communicate to Mr. Whitcombe that it is not the purpose of the Council at present to appoint a lecturer in French. Accounts. —A number of accounts were passed for payment.
