[press association , .] Wellington, Monday. Another welcome fall of rain, which will benefit the farmers, took place this morning,. Bishop Hadfield, of Wellington, Archdeacon Fancourt, the Revs. J. Still, A. Twogood, and A. 0. Williams, left to-day to attend the General Synod at Dunedin. Two Maories have been arrested at the Upper Hutt on the charge of setting fire to a house and injuring stock belonging to a settler in the district. A man named Rooke, charged with robbery of watches ab the Empire Hotel, has been committed for trial.

Oamaru, Monday. ■ A man named William Edwards has been arrested on a charge of robbery of a watch with violence from a man who was partly intoxicated.

DunediNj Monday. At a meeting of bowlers to-night it was decided to play six rinks aside in the Otago v. Canterbury Interprovincial Match. Sixty-four entries were received for the single-handed tournament. The dredger at the Waipa Company's mine was got to work last week, and the prospects are encouraging.

Inveecargill, Monday. At a meeting of the ratepayers of the Minton riding, on Saturday night} it was resolved to petition the Government to declare the riding a separate county. General dissatisfaction was expressed with the management of Southland county affairs, particularly because so little road-making was done for the rates collected.

At Bluff harbour elections to-day, John Macpherson gained the seat for the town, vacated by Henry Wileon. E. Kemp, who has been member of the Board since ita formation, was defeated by E. Pollard, the suburban representative. Mrs. Bowles, who was severely burnt this morning by her clothes catching fire, died to-nighb.
