London, January 9. The Hon. Mr. Chamberlain and his wife met with an enthusiastic reception, at the town-hall, on their arrival in Birmingham. EPIDEMIC OF DIPHTHERIA. Buda-Pesth, January 9. Diphtheria is raging at Nagybariya, and twenty deaths from the disease are reported daily. THE CONNEMARA SCANDAL. London, January 9. The World says that the quarrel between Lor.d and Lady Connemara was caused by the latter demanding the exclusion of her husband's niece. Lady Eva Quinn, from Government House. Lord Connemara at first refused, but subsequently agreed to the demand, and the pair have been reconciled. Lady Eva returns to England. REVIVAL OF TRADE. London, January 8. The Board of Trade returns show there has been a revival of trade during the year. MANCHESTER AND PROTECTION. London, January 8. The Manchester Chamber of Commerce is taking a plebiscite in that city on its protection resolutions. PRINCE HENRY OF BATTENBERG. London, January 9. Prince Henry of Battenberg has been appointed Governor of .Isle of Wight (sic). THE LOSS OF THE RENFREWSHIRE. < Glasgow, January 9. The Board of Trade inquiry in this city was unable to decide now the ship Renfrewshire was lost. THE SEIZURE OF A RAILWAY. Constantinople, January 10. The Scutari - Ismid Railway is the property of Turkey, and was leased to an English company. It has been seized by the Government on the ground that the rent is in arrears. The matter has been referred to the British Government. ! OUTRAGES IN MADRID. Madrid, January 7. A petard exploded in the palace in this city, but without causing serious injury. Several bombs have also exploded in other parts of the city lately. THE SERVIAN~MINISTRY. Belgrade, January 9. The selection of the Servian Cabinet has been deferred. A difficulty has been experienced in forming a new Government. In the meantime M. Ristics retains his position as head of the Government. THE PANAMA CANAL. Paris, January 8. The Panama Canal contractors are accepting shares in the Panama railway as a temporary guarantee. THE QUEEN. London, January 9. Her Majesty Queen Victoria intends to visit Biarritz, a maritime village in France, next March. THE FRENCH REVENUE. Paris, January 9. The French revenue is forty millions above the estimate, chiefly owing to the taxes on sugar and foreign corn. DYNAMITE OUTRAGE. Rome, January 9. An attempt was made to dynamite the Prefecture of Police at Leghorn, but it failed. BANK DIVIDEND. London, January 9. The Union Bank of Australia declares i a dividend of 12 per cent., and carries forward £22,000 to next year. THE GOLD COINAGE. London, January 9. Mr. Goschen intends to improve the gold coinage.
