COUNTRY NEWS.

[FROM OUB OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] m Cambridge, Wednesday. Ihe ordinary monthly, meeting of the Borough Council was held last night. Present: Iho Mayor (Mr. Clements), and Messrs. J. H. Priestley, James Webber, J. Hally, J. R 8. Richardson, A. Bach, and J. 3. Bond. Xhe Returning Officer reported the election (unopposed) ot Mr. James Hally to fill the vacant seat in the Council. Mr. Hally mado the usual declaration, and took his scat. Mr. Lamb applied for a few loads of gravel from the foreshore. Permission granted. A finance report was read, which showed the present overdraft was £672 6s 6d. The Works Committee reported that the road leading to the Karapiro Bridge had been considerably widened; also, that the road leading to Mr. Carter's had been improved. The report was adopted. The Mayor, Mr. Gillett, and the clerk were appointed to sign cheques. Mr. Hally was elected to the Legal and finance The following tenders were received for gravelling :—Wattam and Crouch, per yard (accepted); James Cochrane, lid per yard ; J Meredith, .Is per . yard. No. eligible tender having been received for Dog Registrar it was decided to call fresh tenders with altered conditions. Mr. J. Bates' tender for dog colllars at 7d each was accepted. Mr. Bond proposed that the deposit lodged by Messrs. Dillon, Brockelsby. and Fogarty be returned, as he considered it a hardship to retain the money under the circumstances Messrs. Priestly, Bach and Bond voted for the motion, and Messrs. Webber, Richardson, Young and Hally against. The motion was lost. Mr. Bond drew the attention of the Council to the fact that the fire-ladders provided by the Council were not in their proper places. It was decided to look into the matter and prosecute any person retaining the same. Accounts to the amount of £39 16s were passed for payment, and the Council rose. [by telegraph.—own correspondents.] Cambridge, Wednesday. Who says we cannot grow wheat in Waikato ? By train to-night eight trucks were loaded by Mr. James Taylor, oeing purchased by Mr. G. J. Neill for Auckland nourmills. The wheat is last season's, Mr. Taylor wisely holding on, and is of tiptop quality and brought the top price.
