It will afford general satisfaction in the city and district to learn that the long nnd the bitterly-vexed question of the site and the building of an Old People's Hefuge has been at last settled; and by a majority so large as to be permanently decisive, it has been resolved to erect the building on the Epsom site. We have maintained, and still think, that the Ellerslie site would have been preferable, but, everything considered, the site selected will fairly suit the requirements, and, at all events, incomparably better than some that have been escaped. There is no advantage in referring to the late prolonged contest. All is well that ends well, and we trust now that everyone will willingly sink objections, and give all loyal encouragement to the scheme that has been adopted by the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The man that Mr. Gooseman knows who is prepared to move the Supreme Court tor an injunction against any building of the Ketuge outside of Auckland city, is covetous ot' distinction of a kind ; but probably will think better of it; and we trust also that those who inclined to the well-worn and now rather stale proposal " to take further time for consideration " will see the seeuiliness as well as the wisdom of attaining some finality at last to this very prolonged enquiry. The delay which has attended the effort to utilise Mr. Costley : s bequest tor the comfort of the poor and aged persons whom he had in his mind, has not reflected very much credit on popular representation and administration ; but now that a resolution has been come to by so decisive a majority we trust that the expedition in future proceedings will atone in some sort for the delays and neglect of the past
