The schooner Glencairn sailed yesterday for the Thames, with part of her original cargo of breadstuff's from Lyttelton. She will load back at the Thames to the Canterbury port. James and Co. supply their monthly circular up to 31st December, 1888, as follows :— Our last report went forward on the 27th ultimo, since which there has been no material alteration to report in freights, ex cent for produce. These, owing to the break up of the drought in Sydney, are considerably weaker. The strike at Newcastle is at length finally settled, and vessels are meeting with free despatch from most ports. Demand for tonnage continues good, and we can fix vessels at rates as below for immediate loading : — Timber. fair amount of this has gone forward, both baulk and sawn. The only reported fixtures are the Northern Chief (by ourselves), and the Ilea Vuka. We quote freights at Bs. Produce.— demand for tonnage has fallen off owing to rainfall in Australia, the lka Vuka" and Ryno being the last two despotched at the beginning of the month. From South the Maud Graham and Glencairn have arrived ; while the Gleaner, Clansman, and Natal Queen are expected. Freights may be quoted at 10s.
