New York, December 18. O'Connor will challenge Searle to a sculling match for £1000 aside, to be rowed either at 'Frisco or on the Thames, as he objects to row in Australia, tearing the effect of the climate on his health.
William O'Connor, who now holds the sculling championship of America, is a native of Toronto (Canada). He is 23 years of age, and stands about sft 10£ in high. He weighs about list 121b. He is a very muscular young fellow, and is said to be of a very temperate mode of living. It is said that Edward Hanlan had a great deal to do in bringing O'Connor to the front; and the ex-champion holds the highest opinions of him as a sculler both for style, physique, and stamina, and considers him to be a match for Searle. After several attempts to got a match on with Te6mer (the American sculler) he succeeded, with the result that he defeated Teemer eaeily.
