THE MAHDI'S PRISONERS.

AN APPEAL TO THE GOVERN-

MENT.

SIR J. FERGUSSON'S STATEMENT.

PARLEYING HOPELESS.

Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.

London, December 18. Mr. John Morley, in the House of Commons to-day, urged the Government to open negotiations with the dervishes for the purpose of saving Emin Bey and Stanley.

Sir J. Fergusson said it was doubtful whether Osman Digna's letter was authentic. The date appeared to be too recent, and it was improbable the captives had been taken to Khartoum. The Government were inclined to think it a clever device. They did not consider there were sufficient grounds to open negotiations at Suakim. Londox, December 19.

In the House of Commons to-day, Sir James Fergusson, in an apologetic speech on behalf of the Government, said he believed it was hopeless to parley for the release of Emin Bey and Stanley.
