Sir,—Generally speaking, a civil answer may fairly be claimed for a civil question, but I think that I am entitled to some special credit if I reply promptly and in most polite terms to the very caustic inquiry addressed to us in your issue of today by a correspondent who signs himself "A Shareholder and Not a Butcher," and who must certainly have been in very bad temper when he wrote, as the letter is worded quite feelingly enough to justify a reversal of the nom de plume. At our last general meeting of shareholders (which was held on August, 1887), by an oversight, for which I believe I was personally to blame, the date for the next general meeting was not fixed. Article 35 in the company's articles of association provides " that in the event of such omission, the annual meeting must be held during the month of January," but as such companies as ours are compelled under the Companies Act to hold a general meeting of shareholders once during the calendar year, our directors resolved to hold the meeting a little earlier than the time prescribed by the articles of association, and have decided on Thursday, 27th instant, as the date for the meeting to be held.
