THE INSTITUTION OF THE LORD'S DAY.
TO THE editor. Sir, —The method of procedure laid down for the meeting last Friday night—namely, the enunciation of individual opinions and not discussion, precluded any reply on my part to Mr. Beatty's stricture on my paper, which was made evidently under misapprehension as to what I said. Mr. Beatty, who was asked—and, I presume, consentedto summarise, proceeded instead to criticise the utterances of the speakers whe had preceded him, and stigmatised my view of the institution of the Lord's Day as dangerously misleading, and opening the door to the founding of such sects as the Seventhday Adventists, in that I based it upon the appointment of the Jewish Sabbath. Now that both utterances are in print, perhaps you will kindly allow me to point out that I did nothing of the kind, but stated most explicitly and emphatically that the indefeasible right of every man, of every degree, in every age, and as long as the world shall last, to one day in seven as his own, is shown by the fact that the Sabbath Day was as much a part of creation as the world and even man himself.—l am, &c., William Tebbs. P.S.—There are a few typographical errors in my paper, amongst them one, I think, of sufficient importance to ask correction for : the release of the pendulum should be represented vs " suddenly" not "gradually" made.
