COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office. Thursday evening. The Customs duties to-day amounted to £998 6s '2d. Everything is in such a state of partial excitement in regard to the import and produce market that any remarks based on the spirit of the hour may be useless for the week. A rapid change has come over the state of trade, which may fitly be termed electrical. The terrible drought in Australia is a factor of supreme importance, operating in all directions, Instead 01 New Zealand being the Cinderella of the Australasian group, she is now courted by all Australian buyers as the fair sister. The outlook is Ixstur than has beer, seen for years. Candles .have advanced during the week, due, no doubt, to the rise in tallow. The Australian drought has probably contributed to this market movement. Imported candles are held very stiihy. The arrivals of the lonic and the Richmond have assisted business activity, and sales of all classes of goods are brisk. Kerosene is a trifle weaker. _ New crop currants are advised from Australia as poor in quality, and a strong trade demand for best descriptions of old has res ulted. Salt continues to engross a good deal of attention, holders only caring to quote limited quantities. Owing to the snarp advance in oats, oatmeal has followed suit, and we hear to-day of sales at £lti per ton, f.o.b. Southern ports, for •23 s: yet, locally, sales are being made from old stock at £18 for 7's, and £16 for 23's. We hear of sales of oats to-day from 33 4d to os 9d, but these sales are not on the basis of existing Southern rates. A very strong demand has set in from Sydney. .Maize is worth lis ;>d on the wharf. New potatoes, £6 per ton. Fowl wheat, 4s (3d per bushel. Bran, £6 10s per ton. Onions, IJd. A general advance of £1 per ton in flour lias taken place during the week. In the local produce market the price of the best dairy butter remains at 6d per lb wholesale and hd tier lb retail. It is not so plentiful as it was. Eggs have become scarcer than they have been, and are now quoted at 7d per dozen wholesale and 9d per dozen retail. KAURI GUM MARKETS. This market is much steadier, and there is every appearance of a quiet and steady market at about quotations below. Since the recent excitement, however, buyers have not vet begun to discriminate so much as usual in quality of ordinary, and in the face oi the season for swamp sorts being at hand nearly all ordinary is looked upon as good. We are therefore, in this report, again compelled to eonline ourselves to one quotation, representing both fair and good ordinary. Supplies for the 21 days of November are about 538 tons. We quote Good ordinary, 33s ; East Coast, 435. j LIVE STOCK & PRODUCE MARKETS. AUCKLAND. Messrs. Hunter and Nolan's Weekly Repoht. —Grain, horse feed, .seeds, &c.: There has been an increased demand and marked advance in prices, { Feed oats having advanced to 3s 6d per bushel and sellers have asked 4-, ; maize, from as to 3s 6d. The price for hay is hardening in prospect of the Sydney market. Horses: There has been considerable stir in the market, and a good many have changed owners at slightly improved values. The Durham Yards were crammed on Friday, and there was good competition until towards the end of the sale, when it became slow. We quote hacks at fiom £5 to .£l2 10s; light harness horses, from £7 to £13; draught, £15. Wool, hides and skins: About the usua. quantities were brought forward at the Durham Yards on Tuesday, and the demand was steady at the previous weeks values. No really heavy ox were pitched. We quote ox hides from 3Jd to 4ill per lb ; cow, 2Jd to 3d ; calfskins 3Jd to 4 jd per ib; sheepskins, 2s (id to 5s yd each ; pelts, Cd to 10(1 each ; lambskins, is to Is 9d. Cattle : There has oeen little change in value, and although the numbers brought forward have not been quite up to the average, there have been sufficient for requirements. The Newmarket Yards were fairly well tilled on Tuesday, the demand for ail descriptions was steady, with no noteworthy alteration m value as compared with the previous week. •Sheep : A brisk demand has existed and price have an upward tendency. Wethers in wool sold at lbs ; shorn, from 9s Od to 14s. Lambs were not penned in large numbers, but were lower in value and sold at from tis to 9s 9d. Pigs: Few yarded, but of good description and were well competed for. iVIESSKS. A. BUCKLA.nI> and SON'S Report.— At the Haymarket during the past week fodder has sold more ireely, and grain has risen in value. On Friday last, November 10, near 150 homes were yarded for sale. Riding horses sold freely, and kept "their value, ranging up to £12 10s. Active horses, suitable for carriage and 'bus work, were also in demand, but many of the heavy draughts were withdrawn ; those sold ranged lrom £7 to £20, the latter price being given for brood mares of a superior class. On Tuesday hides pitched in full numbers were better worth about one farthing the lb. Oxhides ranged irom 4jd to 3jd ; cowhides, 3d to 2jd ; calfskins, 4Ad to 3}d the lb. Sheepskins kept their price, and a large number of small parcels of wool sold satisfactorily. For the land advertised, there was little inquiry. The first lot was sold at an advance over the upset price. For the other lots, no offer was obtained, but they are for sale at the upset price named in the advertisement. Two other sections were sold at the auction at Is per acre, and privately, 300 acres at 10s per acre. Wool was oti'e.ed on Wednesday in larger quantity than has hitherto occurred on the rirst sale. There was a lull attendance of buyers, prices were tlnn, and on comparison with the prices obtained for the same clip' last season, an advance of about id was obtained. Prices for longwool ranged irom (jjd to 7£d; crossbred, fid to 7gd the lb. At the country cat*'.••• sales held at Pokeno and Drury fresh-conditioned cattle were better worth, but yearlings to two-year-olds were at late values. At Kemuera on Thursday dairy cows at calving sold from £3 2s ikl to £4 12s Od; three-year-old steers, £3 ; grown steers, £4 lf>s ; two-year-olds, 3.is to 4Us ; empty cows, 30s to 42s each. Fat cattle, in full number, were better worth than last week about Is (id the loOlb, and ranged lrom 12s for cows to j7s for bust steers, averages lor steers were from £7 14s to ijb S.i ; cow brought from £4 10 to £2 10s. Calves in moderate numbers, were at late values. Sheep, also in short supply, advanced in price on best wethers, 2s (id each; shorn wethers were at 13s; wethers in their wool, up to 18s tid. Lambs, in less number than for several weeks, were better worth ; Prices for got .1 quality ranged from 7s to 12s. The pigs yarded were generally of good quality, and satisfactory prices obtained for them. JOHNSON V ILL E. Messrs. Freeman R. Jackson & Co. report (by telegraph, November 22): In consequence of the interrupted railway traffic we again held a postponed sale. Stock came forward in full supply. For beef tile demand was fairly good, and bidding brisk up to a certain point, from which no advance was inade, resulting iii a decline of equal to 10s per head upon late rates. • There was not a demand for .sheep equal to that created last week by small entries to hand, whilst those brought forward today were inferior to them in weight and quality. The woolled sheep were very plain. Limbs sold readily, and pigs were competed for with spirit. Beef made 13s to 1;; the lOOlt); mutton, shorn, ljd to 2d per lb ; in wool, 3d. Cattle : Bullocks, best line, £5 10s to £0 2s 6d, averaging £5 15s; other average, £5 14s; a damaged pen, £5. .Sheep: Shorn wethers, 10s to 10s 2d ; shorn ewes, 7s lOd to 7s lid; lambing, tis lOd to 7s 9d ; wethers in wool, 14s (id. Pigs: Baconers, £2 2s to £3 3s; others, £1 ids to £2 Is; porkers, 18s (id to £1 3s ; stores, 138 to Ids ; smaller sorts, 8s 3d to 9s 3d. WOOL SALE. Messrs. Hunter and Nolan held their first wool sale of the season at the Durham Yards this day. There was a full attendance of buyers. Some interest was felt as to whether recent London advices would affect the prices, but there was really no perceptible effect, mid prices were about the same as those obtained at the Uaymarket sale the previous day. The sales, as in Huckland's, were made on brands, the names of vendors {
