A LADY resident in the city, and whose name is associated with the history of Wellington, has most generously intimated het intention of subscribing a sum of £100 required to add a large striking bell to the new post office clock, so that the record of hours may be heard all over the city. The Minister of Education is expected to leave Melbourne for Wellington on the 27th instant. Mr. J. M. O'Neill, insurance agent, has issued a writ claiming £600 damages against J. P. Brandon, resident secretary or the Colonial Mutual Life Assurance Company on account of alleged libel in a letter written by the latter and published to the Chief Commissioner of the Government Insurance Association and others, whereby ib is contended O'Neill was dismissed from, his situation. • It is expected that immediately after the amval of the Hon. Mr. Mitcholson on lliursday the appointments of railway commissioners and to the. vacant judgeship wili be declared. ChristchTjßCH, Tuesday. An inquest was held at Rangiora to-day on Thos. Topping, whose body was found in the river Ashley. No evidence as to how he had been drowned was forthcoming, aaii , α-n mien verdict was returned. *
