PROPOSED PRACTISING SCHOOL FOR TEACHERS.
Mr. Upton moved yesterdey, at a meeting of the Board of Education :— (1) "That it is desirable to establish a Practising School for teachers." (2) "That the co-operation of the Mount Albert School Committee bo invited, in order that their school may be organised as such Practising School." Ho pointed out that since tho abolition of the Training College there was 110 training ground for teachers ; and the reports of the headmasters now regularly submitted to the Board, as to the ability of the teachers working in their schools, were not sufficient. He proposed that in a school of this kind there should always be, say, six pupils. Mr. Carr would oppose the motion. He thought that if only six were to be taught there would not be a sufficient supply of teachers trained. Besides, he was opposed to the idea of giving one man the power to control appointments, and this was what it would mean. All the schools were practising grounds Mr. Lennox pointed out that considerable dissatisfaction now existed as to the manner in which probationers were removed, and ho thought a practising school would be of great benefit. Mr. Moat would support the motion, lie recollected that some years ago Mr. O'Sullivan had recommended something of this kind.
Mr. Upton did not think that the establishment of such a school would place too much power in the hands of one teacher, though it would place him in a responsible position. At the suggestion of Mr. Luke, the further considerations of the motion was deferred for a week.
