Motrin and Co. a few days ago by the County Council, for indenting a quantity of water mains, has been quashed, it having since been ascertained that in accordance with section '2."1 of the Counties Act, 1886, tenders must bo called for the same, which is now being done. The Borough Council to-night appointed Mr. F. C. Dean (town clerk) valuer for thr ensuing year. [PRESS ASSOCIATION'.] Wellington, Thursday. The annual show of the Wairarapa and East, Coast. Pastoral and Agricultural Society was held at Carterton to-day. The weather was showery, and affected the attendance. The entries numbered 523, being an Increase of 101 over those of last) year. J. R. Raynor was awarded the gold medal for Lincolns. A. McKenzie for Shropshire Downs, W. C. Buchanan tor South, downs. Piscatorious was awarded a prizf as the best thoroughbred stallion, and the Laird of Otago as the best draught stallion. Christchurch, Thursday. w The North Canterbury Agricultural Show was held at Rangiora to-day. The entries numbered 728, against 783 last year. The principal features of the show were the excellent displays of sheep and horses. In fine combing merinos most of the prizes were taken by the Warren estate and by Mallock and Lance. In strong combing merinos Wharton and Co. were the largest! paize-takers, and Mallock and Lance gained a special prize for largest prize-winners in Merino classes generally. P. C. Thickald < Henderson and Mcßeath, and M. Mac * farlane were among the prize-winners ii other sheep. Thickald and W. Seddon were the principal prize-winners for cattle, Macfarlane for draught horses. The annual meeting of the Philosophical Institute was held to-night. The Hon. R. Webb was elected president of the Institute. The members number 107, against! 118 during last year. The receipts for the year were £129, expenditure £118. During the year four papers had been read, againsu seventeen last year. Dunedin, Thursday. At a meeting of the members of the legal profession, to-day, it was decided to oppose the proposal of the Government to shift the site of the Law Courts to the old Supreme Court site, near the railway station, as it was considered inconvenient. A resolution was also carried that it was undesirable to erect new law courts in the present state of the finances of the colony. During last night or early yesterday morning, three large fishing boats belong: ing to A. Thomson were cub adrift at Porl Chalmers and wantonly destroyed, by being chopped with an axe, rendering them use^ less. The only clue is the finding of the bows of the boats in the bush in which • saw was also found. D. 0. Ross was charged to-day with sell ing beer and spirits at Hussar sports, Tahunw Park, without a license. It was contended for the defence that only lemonade and such refreshments had been disposed of, bub on evidence being given of whisky and beer having been bought a plea of "Guilty" was put in, and a fine of £20 and £2 18s costa inflicted. Alexander Henry Kinnimonfc was committed for trial to-day on a charge of embezzling 11s 5d and 13s 9d from his employer, Albert Dornwell. A number of charges have already been heard against Kinnimont, and prior to the last criminal sittings of the Supreme Court his solicitor. , agreed to a case going to trial te end tho affair. The trial took place, and Kinnimont was acquitted, being carried shoulder' high at the close, while there was a strong demonstration against Dornwell. The pre« sent is another of the series of charges. The Exhibition Committee are issuing circulars to all Mayors, chairmen of county councils and town boards, requesting , the formation of a local committee in each district. Waipawa, Thursday. Quite a host of applications for space have been received by the Secretary to the Exhibition. The art exhibits are numerous and valuable, while home industries will make a splendid show.
