Mr. Alexander Aitken's Market Report for the week ending October 2U Business on the whole has been satisfactory. Supplies in the early part of the week were short, but came forward freely at the latter end, but little of any kind left on hand. Old potatoes in fair supply, and an entire clearance effected. New potatoes show a temporary decline. Prices were rather low, partly owinc to growers having overstocked the town a fortnight too soon, as the demand has not yet crown sufficiently to meet heavy supplies, and the crops would benefit by being left in the ground another week or two. Growers should not be in too great a hurry to part with their crops. Satisfactory prices are expected to rule, with a good demand, throughout the season. Poultry was in good supply, but not up to demand ; prices were good. Pigs in good number ; prices unchanged. Vegetables: Good supply, and prices fair." Grain in good supply ; prices firm. Chart' still unsaleable. Butter: Fresh was in heavy supply ; prices further declined. Not much prime corned to hand, anil there were no sales of importance. Some farmers still persist in using coarse salt; such as this sells only at pastry prices. Prime quality in new kegs can lie placed at a good price. Ecirs :In large supply, and further advance in price. Farmers or storekeepers need not fear to consign in any quantity. Bacon : Good supply, no really c.'ioice. Cheese, small supply, all cleared. But little fruit. Friday's sale was very largely attended, and lasted five and a-half hours, with spirited competition. Fowls, ordinary. Is 7d to 2s; poor.
