BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The regular meeting of the Board of Education was held yesterday. Present: Mr. Upton (chairman), Messrs. Carr, Goldie, Lennox, Monk, Udy, Luke, Moat, and Cooper. Balances.—The following statement of balances was submitted :—Education fund, credit, £4363 7s od ; building fund, credit, £666 lis lOd ; Girls' High tachool, credit, £84 13s 4d. Chairman's Report.—The chairman's report as to temporary arrangements made since the last meeting was read and adopted. Dargaville.—The committee applied for increased school accommodation on account of the increased and prospective increase of attendance. There was a second letter from the committee declining to contribute out of school funds to cost of painting. The first application was deferred for the inspector's report. As lo the other question, Mr. Udy said that there was great dissatisfaction with the circular re painting schools, for country school districts complained that while they had contributed to the painting of their schools those in the city and suburbs were painted at the cost of the Board. The Chairman said that the resolution of the Board was imperative that all should contribute. East Tamaki.—This Committee asked that a water tank be provided, as the one at present in use was not sufficient to supply the requirements during the summer months. The application was declined. Fern Flat, Mangonot.—Mr. Rhodes forwarded a resolution of a public meeting concerning the establishment of a school in the settlement. The application was unfavourably reported on by the Inspector, and it was declined. Hikdtaia School.—The ordinary certificate of the Chairman of Committee as to the state of the school was received. Mercuryßay.— Mr. Arch. Smith reported that the upper mill was destroyed by fire on the 7th July, and the syndicate did not intend to rebuild it; and a number of married people having left, the attendance at the school was reduced to 8. It was agreed to close the school. Mount Eden.—This committee called attention to the necessity for more accommodation for their overflowing school. They also asked the Board to grant £15 to erect an additional bedroom to the master's house. Mr. Cooper, in regard to the first proposition, pointed out that there was ample accommodation in adjacent schools. The request was declined, and the committee was requested to inform the Board how many children outside their district attended the school. In regard to the second request it was declined. Otahuhct.This committee asked the, advice of the Board on a question whia'n had given considerable trouble to tfae committee. It was this: After the 'appointment of the present committee the secretary wrote to the late secretary/ and treasurer to hand over the book?,, etc. According to the books there was a cash balance of £1 9s, which ought to hp.ve been handed over to the new committee, but which remained in the hands o'i the late chairman. He was written t?o for this money, but the committee coul d only get a verbal statement that no suo'n money remained in his hands. The Chairman said it was entire'y a matter for 'the committee. The money belonged to thsr.ii, and it rested with them to take steps to. recover it. Waitoa Valley.—Mr. Charles Gould asked what were the prospects of getting up a school at Waitoa Valley? If the Board put up the school on the'propcr site the settlers would contribute towards it. The application wa?, referred to the inspector for his report. Scholarships. —. The programme of papers for examination of candidates was submitted ; aivj, on the motion of Mr. Upton, the Rev,. Mr. Gulliver, M.A., and the Rev. J. Campbell, late head master of the Napier H\r/h School, were appointed at a salary of £"7,-, each.
Appointment of Teachers.—Miss Murran was appointed assistant-teacher at Russell ; Mr. Pjlmsley to remain temporarily at Pokenr, alley ; Mrs. Carr was appointed sewing t-»*.cher at Mangatawhiri.
