BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board of Education held their regular meeting yesterday afternoon. The following members were present: Messrs. J. H. Upton (chairman), Udy, Monk (M.H.R.), Luke, Lennox, Carr, Goldie (M.H.R.) Retrenchment. —Mr. Cooper's motions proposing a reduction of the salaries and numbers of teachers, which were debated some time ago by the Board, and the decision on which was postponed, were again brought forward. A letter was received from Mr. Cooper, stating that he was unavoidably absent from the meeting, and asking that the further consideration of the motions be adjourned for another week. Mr. Lennox pointed out that an immense reduction had been made in the number of the staff, and thought this might meet Mr. Cooper's views. Mr. Cooper's request was agreed to.

Entertainments in School dings. —A letter was received from the Henderson Committee, regretting that the Minister of Education had deprecated the use of school buildings for entertainments. They pointed out that the purpose of any entertainments, which they held in the local building, were in aid of the school funds. Mr. Lennox thought that permission might be given in an exceptional case of this kind. The Chairman thought they might reply that the Board understood the Minister's circular merely as an admonition to Committees to be careful, and it was resolved accordingly. Tenders.— was resolved to call for tenders for the building of schoels at Hukerenui South and Waimamaku.

School Paddock.—With reference to the school paddock at Kaukapakapa, which had been spoiled by the railway line being laid through it, it was agreed, on the motion of Mr. Monk, " that the land be offered to the Government in exchange for, a suitable allotment."
