WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.
[BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, Tuesday. I am informed that the Premier gave Mr. Westgnrtll yesterday a very favourable impression of the reception of the proposals for the consolidation of colonial loans. lie recognised the great importance of the statement which had been made as to the practicability of a large scheme of the kind, and he promised to bring the question before the Cabinet at an early date. The reduction of interest to .'5 pel' cent, upon all the indebtedness of the colony would represent an immense saving.
CLOStNd OP PRIMARY SCHOOLS WITHOUT
AUTHORITY. In consequence of the representations to the Inspector-General of schools, he has issued to the Education Boards a circular requesting that the attention of schoolmasters should be directed to the following words in the Order-in Council, by which the calculation of average attendance is regulated :—"The school shall be held to bo open any morning or afternoon if one child he present before the first half-hour of the ordinary school time lias passed." The circular also states that the dismissals of pupils with the intention of avoiding the entry in the register of the marks that would indicate a small attendance must be regarded as a falsification of the register.
Sit REP DEPARTMENT. The changes recommended in this department by the Sclect Committee (joint) of the Inst session will take place on the Ist of Oetobcr. The office of Superintending inspector is abolished, and Mr. P. B. Bayley, who filled the office, is likely to go to Auckland as Inspector. The colony i> divided into six districts, each in charge of an Inspector. The Inspectors "are to form u Council of Advice during each session of Parliament. THE SEACLJi'F ASYLUM. The Colonial Secretary is to inspect thi.-. building during his visit. He brings hi.family to reside in Wellington on his return.
